About FloodRate
FloodRate is an independent reference site for US flood insurance (NFIP) cost and flood-zone risk. US flood insurance cost & flood-zone risk, by state — built on FEMA NFIP data.
What we do
We turn public FEMA and OpenFEMA data into plain-language pages so anyone can answer the questions that matter: how much does flood insurance cost in my state, what does my FEMA flood zone mean, and do I actually need a policy? We cover all 51 US states and DC and explain all 11 FEMA flood-zone designations, plus a rough premium estimator.
Where our data comes from
- Average premiums — the FEMA NFIP "Policy Information by State" report (US public domain).
- Claims — the OpenFEMA FIMA NFIP Redacted Claims dataset, with records since 1978 (US public domain).
- Flood-zone definitions — FEMA's official Flood Zones glossary and FIRM designations (US public domain).
- Pricing context — FEMA's NFIP Pricing Approach (Risk Rating 2.0).
Every figure is attributed to its source and dated. The only numbers we generate ourselves are the clearly-labelled estimator outputs, computed by a transparent formula documented on our methodology page.
Important: this is not insurance advice
Flood insurance is a YMYL ("your money or your life") topic. Everything here is general information and estimates, not professional, financial or insurance advice. State averages are benchmarks; your real premium is set per property under Risk Rating 2.0. Always verify with FEMA, FloodSmart.gov or a licensed insurance agent before making a decision.
